Extract from H. B.M. MILITARY ATTACHE'S LETTER No.M. A./133. dateć

8th JUNE, 1942,

"I forward herewith the original copy of the first Intelligence Summary received from Lieutenant J.D. CLAGUE, R.A., who, as stated in my letter M A./133 of 28th May, 1942, I left in KUKONG to act as Intelligence Officer to Lieutenant-Colonel L.T. RIDE and the M.I.9 organisation. Further special reports on Japanese sentries and on the Taikoo Dock were not ready at the time the safe hand opportunity left and will follow.

The report is of value and contains much interesting material and, in my opinion, jusitifles the appointment of an Intelligence Officer in Kukong.

I regard as of particular interest :-

(a) The efforts made by the Japanese to get the maximum amount of

naval repair work done in the various dockyards.

(b) The small number of Japanese troops left in Hongkong.

·(c) · The efforts

-

not always successful to suborn the Indian population, and the Chinese hatred of the Indian Police. It must be remembered that the Indian population in Hongkong is in a son that difficult position.

(d) The growing rumours that P.0.W. are to be removed to Formosa.

(e) Confirmation if such still be needed · of the fact that many

Japanese photographers were in fact military personnel.

(f) The wholesale defection of the Chinese detective force to the

Japanese.

It is to be hoped that the names of all those, of whatever nationality who are now helping the Japanese, are being carefully noted in India or London, against the day when just retribution can be meted out."
