10th August 1942

Many thanks for your letters of the 18th and 26th of May. With regard to Malaya and Hong Kong, the sort of information that we are anxious to obtain relates particularly to the actions of the occupying power in regard to the administration of the colonies. We should like to know something regarding the following matters in particular;

Currency policy.

Control of banks.

Retention or otherwise of British officials and the powers which they are permitted to exercise. Constitution and powers of military courts. Action with regard to enemy property and. particularly terms and conditions upon which factories are required to work for the Japanese war effort.

we should also be glad to receive English versions of any proclamations issued by the cccupying power; no doubt information such as the above will come through only slowly but nevertheless we shall always be glad to have it.

With all good wishes.

Yours very sincerely,

Sir Arthur Dave, K.C.M.G., 0.3.E.
