RETRIBUTION IN FULL

MEASURE"

RESOLVE OF CANADA

FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT

OTTAWA, MARCH 11

Commenting on Mr. Eden's statement about Japanese atrocities at Hong-kong, Mr. Mackenzie King, the Prime Minister, said in the House of Commons yesterday that words did not begin to express the sense of outrage and the feeling of bitter resentment felt by civilized people every- where.

Retribution for this barbaric behaviour will follow in full measure in due course," he said. Meanwhile, Canadian soldiers and civilians at Hong-kong and elsewhere in the Far East are at the mercy of the Japanese. Remembering this, it is of the utmost im- portance that no act of vengeance should be permitted against Japanese in Canada, since

such would be made an excuse for retaliation upon Canadians in the Orient.'

Mr. Hanson, the Conservative Party leader, said the atrocities would shock the whole world and renew the determination to end for ever those systems of government under which they were permitted.

Mr. Coldwell, the C.C.F. (Labour) leader, declared that those responsible must be brought to justice.

The revelations, which have been given widespread publicity. have shocked and outraged the Canadian people. There is no disposition to challenge the advice of the leaders of all political parties against taking special reprisals upon Japanese resi- dents in Canada, but there is an intensified demand that the measures for their rigid sur- veillance shall be sternly carried out and that no licence shall be allowed them.
