You have been inside the office occupied by the Colonial Secretary himself or by some of his assistants?

If you are getting at the size of the office I should say it was something like 16'x 20.1

In any case as compared with the offices of this building ( referring to the Colonial Secretariat occupied by the Colonial Secretary and his assistants, you would say it was spacious enough for the number of people working in it?

I cannot make a comparison, but I might say it would be very uncomfortable working in a room of that size.

Did you observe the walls of that room?

They were partitions.

Carried right to the ceiling or not?

I cannot remember.

Inside my room was it a haven of peace from the turmoil going on outside?

It was very much quieter.

Now on the question of shroffs. I believe you have seen many minutes written by me in which I compalined of the inadequacy of shroffs?

Two or three minutes they were of a general nature, they were not asking for the particular appointment of an extra man, they were just a general complaint.

You have from time to time supplied me with shroffs?

Yes.

And you have also changed the shroffs; and demanded the return of a shroff, when another would be sent?

No, I have in accordance with your request asked for permission to obtain s hroffs from the Colonial Secretariat. In the meantime

so that you could carry on with experienced men I have let you have my experienced men. When your men were trained I withdrew

my men.

Taking by and large the average experience a shroff has before

he works in my office - how does that compare with the average
