In addition to the frequent measurœnants from plumb linos

accurato thoodolite readings have been taken ench wook at many points

of the buildings,

Thone show that over a period of six weaks from 16-4-42

to 31-5-41 the front veraikiah wall has sunk at the contro ¿*.

Readings taken on the morning following the collapse of the varandak

columis showed a sudden further sinking movamont of 17". The longth

of the verandah had boen divided for purposes of those roadings into

8 points and the amount of settlommt at each point roading along

from 1 to 8 after the morning of the collapse was as follows

The settlcseit is attributable to two causes (1) the construction of

tunnels wider tho house and in the rounds in front of the house

(2) the subsidance of the ground upon which the house is built.

It is considered that the former cause in the chief facter in the settlement as the roadings show by far the greater movemmit to have takom plzoo at the centre of the front olovation, at which point a tunnel 36 feet bolew the foundations passos at right anglos under the verandah and min front wall and is oxtondod upwards in a shaft to an outrance within the basement.

The North verandah is the only part of the building immedia toly effected by tho rogant movamont but this is been so severe that damge to the reminder of the old building could easily follow in consequeios,

It was therefore considered advisable to warn H. E. the Governor that owing to the risk of further movamɑit, the house is at present wisafe to stay in.

It is impossible to say at prosent omatly what the future

possibilities of the house are owing to the deep soated unture of the
