2. It will be observed that the Treasury are of the opinion that the strictly proper course would be for the Colonial Office to accept Colonial Office to accept only that part of the expenditure in question which relates to the wives and families of civilians, leaving the remainder of the claim, which relates to the wives and families of Service personnel, to be met by your Department and the war office.

3. The Colonial Office is accordingly prepared to accept the expenditure set out in Sections 1 and 2 of the claim, amounting to Pesos 91,072.44, and I am to enquire whether your Department, in conjunction with the War Office, is prepared to accept the expenditure in Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the claim, amounting to Pesos 167,876.50. On learning from you the proportion of this sum to be charged to Navy funds, stepa will be taken to refer the claim to the Comptroller and Auditor General, in order to obtain his agreement to the non submission of vouchers, in accordance with the procedure set out in Treasury Circular Ko. 1A/42, and then to settle
