In line with an understanding between the Red Cross and the

Army authorities, under which the Red Cross was to provide civilian

accommodations as soon as possible, on July 15, 513 were removed

by special train to Baguio. On the same date 306 went to the Palma

de Mallorca Hotel, which was used as a clearing house. The major-

ity of those in Palma de Mallorca Hotel were soon transferred to

large houses furnished as dormitories under Red Cross management.

The Manila Club turned over their badminton club house to be used

as a center for the evacuees, and on July 16 another group of 30

were transferred to this Club from Ft. McKinley. The Knights of

Columbus also gave up their club rooms which were gratefully used

as another center. The remaining women and children (with the

exception of 278, who stayed at Ft. McKinley the entire period

until they were taken direct to the first boat, S. S. Christian

Huygens leaving for Australia on July 28) were placed in other

fi

ti

large houses set up by the Red Cross Housing Committee.

The preg-

nant mothers were sheltered in the Emmanuel Hospital. The Hospicio

de San Jose offered to take care of one group. Two sugar centrals,

Del Carmen and Calamba, took a limited number.

Evacuees at Ft.

McKinley were completely discharged by July 28, 1940.

The following two graphs show at a glance the number of Hong

Kong evacuees arriving in Manila and their departure, by date and

number, to various places of shelter:
