Sir,

I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter

dated 14th December, 1940, with reference to your salaries

tax.

2. I have to inform you that as it is now clear that

you are not liable to Canadian income tax, you are bound

to pay local salaries tax unless you obtain exemption from

His Excellency the Governor in Council. Should you apply

for such exemption, I am prepared to extend your time for

payment until His Excellency's decision is made known;

otherwise I shall be obliged to enforce payment.

3. I would add that, as you are doubtless aware, this

Department is not concerned with Government policy in the

matter of evacuation, or in any other matter. Its duty is

to collect War Taxation in accordance with the provisions

of the War Taxation Ordinance.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your obedient servant,

Sa. H. Lourensz

Assistant Commissioner,

Unit II.

E. S. Doughty, Esq.,

Department of Mines and Resources,

Immigration Branch,

HONG KONG.
