I
expect you will have heard a month or two ago from Elton about the generous offer of the Rhodes Trustees to establish Studentships to be held at Oxford over the next five years by one or more Chinese or Chine se-Bri ti sh subjects who have gradua ted at Hong Kong University. This project has now, I am glad to say, gone through and we have been informed by the Governor of Hong Kong that the University authorities there are now considering the selection of a suitable holder of the studentship who would, it is hoped, arrive in time to start work at Oxford in the autumn.
We shall of course inform you officially as soon as we hear that a nomina- tion has been made, but, knowing that you like to have as long notice as possible of these overseas students and that the time of year is approaching when Colleges, in normal circums tances at any rate, begin to fill up for at autumn, I thought I would let you know the present position at once, in case you would like to be making preliminary inquiries about a College for the first nominee.
It has occurred to me that, in view of the Master's special interest in China and Chinese Universities, Balliol would be a very happy choice of College for the first Rhodes Trust Post-Graduate Student, if they were pre- pared to receive him; but you are of course
