In secondary departments there were 972 students, 157 being
in the Government secondary school for girls (Belilios School).
(b) Vernacular.
There were 17 rural primary schools for girls with an
enrolment of 2,387.
In the Urban areas 30,260 girls attended schools of which
three were grant-aided, 61 subsidised and 281 non-subsidised.
There is one Government vernacular secondary school with
an enrolment of 151.
11. Higher Education.
(a) Teacher raining.
A training college for teachers was opened in September,
1939, in temporary premises and in March, 1941, moved into the new
buildings specially designed for the purpose and named Northcote
training College.
Courses were provided for men and women who had passed the
local Matriculation (or its equivalent) on the English side, and
the Middle School Certificate on the vernacular side.
In September, 1941, the first graduates appeared (38 out
of an original enrolment of 48) and all were employed locally.
At that time the College had the following composition:

The staff consisted of a Principal, 4 permanent lecturers on the
English side and 3 on the Chinese side, with some 20 visiting
lecturers.
(b) University of Hong Kong.
The University offers courses of study in the faculties
of Arts, Science (engineering) and medicine, and conducts its own
Matriculation examination as qualification for entrance.
During 1939 there were 538 students on the roll, of whom
118 were women.
