(c) The curriculum included chemistry, physics, mathematics,

English, Chinese, geography, history (French, Urdu, Portuguese,

Landarin, are optional subjects). All instruction is in English.

9. Vocational Education.

(a) The Evening Institute (Government continuation classes) has

been in existence since 1907, and was established in response to

popular demand. During 1940-41 there were 844 students enrolled

(698 men) and instruction was given in English, book-keeping,

shorthand, pharmacy, pedagogy (English and Vernacular), hygiene,

physical education, field surveying, building, engineering, ship-

building, electro-technics, wireless telegraphy, handiwork, art,

kindergarten, biology and domestic science.

(b) The Junior Technical School provided/apprenticeship training

for the three dockyards and private firms.

(c) The Trade School (153 students) gave apprenticeship courses

in electrical and mechanical engineering and building construction.

11 gained a building diploma, 13 automobile diplomas and 8 qualified

to enter the Chinese Government service as mechanical engineers as a

result of a China-wide examination in 1940. 12 obtained wireless

operators certificates (6 Board of Trade and 6 Far Eastern

certificates). The school draws its students from the Junior

Technical School, Government and Aided secondary schools.

10. Female Education (English)

(a) 452 girls were in attendance at the Government primary

division of Bililios School and 2,387 in seven Grant-aided schools.

The curriculum is much the same as for boys' schools with the

addition of native study (leading to Botany and Biology), needlework

and domestic science.
