Boys (English Schools)

The education of European children is dealt with separately

(Page 9). There are seven Government English primary schools for

Non-European boys, one of which is for Indians only, and in addition

there are primary divisions in the two Government secondary schools

for boys.

Admission to these schools is obtained by examination and

the standard expected is that which should be reached after four years

in a local vernacular school. Chinese, arithmetic and general

intelligence form the basis of the tests and a knowledge of English

is not expected. Successful candidates must be under 12 years of

age, and they enter Class 8, the lowest division of the primary

schools.

those who wish to continue their education in Government or Aided

secondary schools, and 35 scholarships are open for competition.

In some of these schools English is taught as a foreign

language up to Class 6, when it becomes the medium of instruction.

In others the medium of instruction is English, with suitable
