Dear Mr. Eden,

with reference to my letter of 27th December concerning

the treaty with Chins on extraterritoriality, the Department

of state has telegraphed me that it has been

informed by the Chinese Embassy that the Chinese

Government has agreed to our counter suggestion

in regard to the preamble of the treaty. The

Department mentions that a few questions respecting the

Chinese text remain for adjustment and that if these

are settled speedily the treaty and supplementary

exchange of notes may be signed presumably on 4th or

5t

January.

Yours sincerely,

(sgd.) E. Freeman Matthews

The Rt. Hon. Anthony Eden, M.0.

secretary of State for Foreign Affsirs

whitehall, 8.3.1.
