We shall, no doubt, have a great rush at the last moment when the Ambassador reports, and if we have any reason to object to that formula we should do so at once.
New Territories of Hong Kong, The outward telegram is 157 and the Ambassador's reply 170. The Ambassador agrees that we should first try to dispose of the Chinese claim for the New Territories by telling them that we regard that area of Hong Kong as outside the scope of the present Treaty, and that we consider that any adjustment in such areas, involving interests of more than one country and of great strategical importance, must be left for the peace settlement.
