Extraterritoriality.

We should be glad to learn what the intentions of His Majesty's Government may be as re arda future rights of British subjects to acquire real property in China under our draft treaty. We note that existing title protection grp. omitted ↑ 187 safeguarded under Article 5 and that existing rights to acquire land on perpetual lease in Treaty porta and by missions in the interior will be preserved indirectly under Article 8, by referring back to old treaties. Is it proposed to reserve point to be dealt with in commercial treaty. Declarations attached to [grp. undec. ? Americɛn and other treaties renewed with China in 1928 provided for the right to live and trade and acquire property.
