Sirs,
کا
1.
HONGKONG AND KOWLOON WATER SUPPLY.
TAI LAM CHUNG VALLEY SCHEME.
We have now the honour to report with regard to the
steps which should be taken to increase the sources of supply of water
for Hong Kong and Kowloon.
2.
The Public Works Department at Hong Kong had come to
the conclusion that any site selected must be capable of
development to cope with the demand of a rapidly increasing
population, the quantity of water supplied having increased from
a daily average of 17.9 million gallons in 1935 to 26.9 million
gallons in 1939, notwithstanding that restrictions were in force
in each of these years.
3.
We agree that the only possibility of obtaining the
quantity of water which would be required is to construct a
reservoir in the Tai Lam Chung Valley to impound not only the
water which flows from the natural catchment area, but to add
to that area by means of catchwaters, which could be extended as
circumstances dictated.
Possible sites for the dam which would be required
were therefore selected, and the sub-surface conditions of two
of them, referred to hereafter as the upper and lower sites,
were explored by means of boreholes.
5.
You supplied us with contoured maps showing the
position of the proposed dams, cross sections at the two sites,
and the details of the boreholes as the work of exploration
proceeded.
