Owing to increased cost and shortage of foodstuffs there was increased morbidity of certain diseases, in particular pallagra, beri-beri, cholera tuberculosis and dysentery. These were expected to be even more pronounced in 1941 especially intestinal infections, owing to the defective system of night- soil conservancy.

The Chinese hospitals were so overcrowded that it was not uncommon to have three or more the number of patients in hospitals than there were beds.

1940 had been a difficult year, as the D. M. S. says, and no doubt will have proved no less so during 1941 with a dramatic and tragic close.
