T had a visit this morning from Colonel Hoskyns of the U.S. Army by arrangement made through Sir G. Gater's P.-S. He is Chairman of the U.S. Board of Trustees of Lingan University (Canton). This American university at Canton took refuge in Hong Kong when Canton was overrun by the Japs, and he expressed the fullest appreciation of the full welcome and help given to them by Hong Kong University on that occasion. He has the greatest respect and admiration not only for Hong Kong University but for
Dr. Sloss, its Vice Chancellor, in particular.

When Hong Kong was overrun Linnan University had been reconstituting itself in Kukong in Northern Kuangtung. The American Board have plenty of money available, but the trouble, of course, is teaching staff and equipment. He for his part wants particularly to bring up to scratch the medical school of the university, which he says is much below standard in its improvised setting.
The Americans, he told me, have a similar sort of system as is provided by our
