Public Works to accept some of our other land in lieu but this was a matter in which he was not interested.

With the tendency for the sizes of ships to increase we feel bound to develop towards deep water and we see no other way to do so than to get space at this corner of our property. We may add that in

1919 we endeavoured to purchase this land but at that time Government would not accede to our request.

Had the special circumstances not arisen we would not have written this letter but in the circumstances we earnestly beg for special and favourable consideration from the Government and that we be permitted to purchase the land at upset price by private treaty.

We are,

Yours faithfully,

Hong Kong & Whampoa Dock Co. Ltd.,

(sd) E. Cock.

Chief Manager.
