Sir,
With reference to Mr. Gent's letter of the 5th instant, 54002/2/40) I am directed by the Minister of Finance to state that particulars of the service and qualifications of Messrs. A. V. Currie and Mr. V. A. Perkins, were recently furnished to the Under Secretary of State, Home Office. For convenience, a copy of those statements is enclosed herewith. In the view of this Ministry either of the two officers in question would be suitable for the discharge of the duties required in the Assessor's Office, Hong Kong. As regards the question of preference between these two officers, there is no marked distinction, although slight favour could be expressed in the case of Mr. Perkins. Mr. Perkins is a married man (without family) and Mr. Currie is unmarried. Either of these officers could be released for immediate temporary secondment to Hong Kong.
During the period of secondment a pension contribution of 15% of the officer's Northern Ireland salary would be required, and if he ultimately retires, either from the Colonial or Northern Ireland Service, in circumstances qualifying under the Superannuation Acts for a gratuity or pension, he will be dealt with as provided in No.9 of the Rules framed under Section 7 of the Superannuation Act, 1909.
If the Under Secretary of State will be good enough to intimate his decision as to the selection of the officer and the date on which he will be required to sail, the Ministry of Finance will take steps to facilitate the necessary arrangements.
of State,
The Under Secretary
Colonial Office, Downing Street, London S.W.1.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
R&Thornley
(Princip Establishment Officer).
