With reference to your confidential letter
53838/35/40 of 6th May, 1940, I can assure you that,
much as we should like to assist in the solution of
this problem, it is out of the question that we should
receive the internees in this country.
Problems of
defence are giving us too much anxiety to permit of
any such additional demand upon our resources of man-
power as the surveillance of these internees would
entail.
Nor do the political conditions here encourage
us to accept into our midst soldiers of the Chinese Army.
