Cypher telegram to Sir R. Craigic

Foreign Office 11th April, 1940.

No. 280

& & & & & &

(Tokyo)

5.15 a.m.

Your telegram No. 403 [of 7th March:

seizure of s.s.

SAGRES, LALITA, and DHOLERA], not repeated anywhere.

As regards the LALITA, the New Dholcra Steamship Company

are prepared to accept Japanese Government's offer contained

in your telegram No. 332 [of 21st February] provided the

DHOLERA which belongs to the same company is released at the

same time, both steaners to be delivered in Singapore before

30th April, in the same condition in which they were at the

time of capture, to the chairman of New Dholera Steamships

Limited or is duly constituted agent in writing.

2. This attitude is directly opposed to that of the

owners of the SAGRES (Hong Kong telegram to Colonial Office

No. 140 [of 20th March]) but as payment of compensation in any

event unlikely I think that unless you sec objection the replies

of both owners should now be communicated to the Japanese

Government.

Repeated to Shanghai No. 312 Hong Kong No, 8.
