FUNG LOI YAU, age 20 years, master of Fishing Junk No.1172

H.A., Native of Hong Kong, states:-

At about 12.00 hours on 11th December, 1939, I 筲箕湾

left Shaukiwan Harbour on board the above junk to go fishing

in Chinese Waters together with a crew of 15.

At about 05.00 hours on 9th January, 1940, my junk

碣石

was at anchor about 5 miles off the shore at KIT SHEK Village

海丰

in HỐI FÙNG District, together with 5 other junks, when I

noticed a Japanese trawler go alongside a junk owned by

陳帶根

CHAN TAI KAN. At the same time I noticed some Japanese

sailors lower a motor boat which came alongside my junk.

Four Japanese sailors dressed in khaki uniform then boarded

my junk and told me to lower my dinghy and ordered me and my

crew into the dinghy and told us to row ashore. About half

an hour later I noticed the Japanese set fire to my junk.

The five other junks which were lying alongside my junk were

also on fire. I returned to my junk and with the assistance

of my crew put out the fire. The damage caused by fire to

my junk is about $1,000.00 Hong Kong currency. My junk was

only partly burnt.

At about 12.00 hours on 10th January, 1940 I set

sail for Hong Kong together with the crews of the five junks

which were lying alongside my junk. We arrived in Hong Kong

at 08.00 hours on 12th January, 1940. The five junks which

were lying alongside my junk all sank and became total loss.
