At about 18.00 hours on 23rd December, 1939, I left

332

Shaukiwan Harbour on board the above junk to go fishing in Chinese

Waters together with a crew of 8.

At about 04.00 hours on 9th January, 1940 my junk was at

碣 石

anchor about 11⁄2 miles from the shore at KIT SHEK Village in HÓI

FUNG District when I was awakened by Gun fire. I came up on deck

and saw a Japanese motor boat approaching my junk.

I and my crew

About 15 minutes

at once lowered our sampan and rowed ashore.

later I saw the Japanese board and set fire to my junk. They then

boarded their motor boat and steamed away towards the West and set

fire to a number of other junks anchored in the vicinity.

After the Japanese motor boat had left I and my crew

returned to our junk and extinguished the flames.

The damage

caused by fire to my junk is about $3,000.00 H.K. currency.

$1,000.00 H. K. currency and $1,500.00 Chinese currency, all in

notes, which was in a wooden box in the after cabin were burnt. One

rifle v. $25,00 and clothing to value of $100.00 were also burnt.

I left KIT SHEK for Hong Kong at 08.00 hours on 15th
