Honourable Colonial Secretary.
I submit the report of an attack by an uniden-
tified Japanese trawler on Pishing Junks Nos.1822, 1490W
and one number unknown, which occurred at about 12.00
houre on 18th October, 1939, in British waters, Colonial
and Territorial, off Mirs Point.
2.
The owners of the three fishing junks are brothers
and natives of Shaukiwan, Hong Kong. They claim that they
were fishing between Hak Ngan Kok and Mirs Point, when a
Japanese trawler approached from the south-east. Fishing
Junk No.1822V was the first to be attacked, the crew wad-
ing ashore. After setting fire to the junk, the Japanese
then attacked the one, the licence number of which is un-
known, owned by Cheng Chau Kwai, setting fire to it.
Lastly they attacked Fishing Junk No.1490W and fired that
also. Shots were fired at all three fishing junks but no
one was injured. All occupante reached the shore safely,
and were later picked up by a junk and conveyed to Nam 0,
Chinese Territory, and from there to Shaukiwan.
Owing to strong north-easterly weather in Firs
Bay, the masters of 18227 and 1490 could not be taken
out to point out the scene of the attack until 22nd Octo-
ber, 1939. They pointed out the place they were fishing
as being a short distance off shore about 2/5 mile inside
the boundary of British and Chinese waters and territory
at Mirs Point. The bearing of the position of the attack
