Kwok HUNG MING, 35 years,

Junk Foki of Trading Junk No.T4067H,

residing on board, of Hong Kong.

States:-

I am the son of the master of the above junk and we sailed from Hong Kong to MAR KING, HOI FUNG, at 11.00 hours on the 9th May, 1940, with a cargo of rice and arrived at our destination at about 17.00 hours on the 10th May, 1940. The crew consisted of 10 male s 4 females and 1 child. At 11.00 hours on the 12th May, 1940, whilst lying at anchor in MAR KING with some of the cargo of rice still on board, we saw 5 aeroplanes flying towards us from the east. I did not know the identity of the planes, but as soon as we saw the planes coming we all rushed down into different holds of the junk with the exception of two who jumped into the water. After we had got into the hold I heard the sounds of machine guns and the explosion of bombs. The attack continued for about 10 minutes after which when we could hear the planes no longer we all came out on deck. I then saw my father KWOK YING CHUN who was on deck and noticed that he was bleeding at the back of the head, there were also two other males and two females injured by bomb splinters. Our junk was not directly hit by a bomb but another junk that was lying nearby received a direct hit and was sunk. It must have been the splinters from the hit that injured the members of our crew.

After we had cleared our cargo we sailed for Hong Kong, arriving at Shaukiwan at 12.00 hours on the 17th May, 1940, where the injured were removed to ueen Mary Hospital. One of the wounded males was one of the two who jumped into the water.
