Detective Office,

Water Police Station,

25th August, 1940.

LI CHIU, 21 years, Owner of Class IV Boat No. 2532V, residing on board, of TAI PING Village, TUNG KUN District,

States:-

At about 15.30 hours on 5.8.40 I left Tai Ping

Village, TUNG KUN District, bound for Hong Kong. I had a cargo

af 38 piculs of melons valued $100.00 and 70nducks valued $100.0

Total value $ 200.00 on board. There was a crew of three on

board. (Tal Ping Village not shown on chart).

At about 02.00 hours on 6.8.40 when sailing

about half a mile off TA SHAN Custom Station (Long.115° 25′ 30′′I Lat 230 11'45"N.) a small warship painted grey, one funnel,

flying the Japanese flag and No.18 painted amidship, came out

from TAI SHAN Custom Station. Without warning several shots

from a machine gun were fired by the crew of the warship at my

junk. The warship was then about 300 yards away. My crew and

I jumped in the sea and held on to the sides of the junk, as fai

as I know none of the shotshit the junk. The warship came along

side my junk. One of the Japanese crew called out to us in the

Punti dialect "Don't be afraid, go back on board your junk."

We climbed on board the junk and the warship towed my junk to

TAI SHAN Custom Station.

On the instructions of the Japanese sailors we

placed the crates containing the ducks on board the warship. We

were then ordered to sail to the beach and unload the melons on

to the foreshore. We did so. On the foreshore the Japanese

searched my person and took away my boat licence. They then

instructed us not to sail to Hong Kong, but to proceed to Chinese Territory. We set sail for TAI PING, andṭarrived there at 16.00 hours. same date (6.8.40).

On the 21.8.40 I set sail for Hong Kong,

arriving in the Colony on 22.8.40.

25.8.40.
