The advantages would be that the dam would intercept a much larger catchment area which would increase the possible yield, and that the construction costs should be considerably less seeing that the length of the main dam would be slightly over half that at the Upper site, and the height would be about the same.
From the Report dated 12th January, 1940, it appears that boreholes are being sunk to investigate the sub-surface conditions, and it is stated that apparently good rock shows at the surface of
both the E. and W. banks.
We should welcome the following further information
—
(a)
(b)
(c)
A cross-section of the valley at the site of the main Dam.
A cross-section at the site of three subsidiary dams.
Information as to the sub-surface conditions as revealed
by one or two boreholes at the site of the subsidiary dam situated nearest to the main dam,
which would enable us to decide whether further exploration is
necessary at the Upper site.
With regard to the third paragraph of your letter. The information as yet available is not sufficient for the guidance of a partner visiting Hong Kong, and we would respectfully suggest that the visit should be paid after the receipt of information covering the sub-surface conditions at the Lower site.
As our senior partner, Mr.W.J.E.Binnie, will be visiting
Hong Kong, and wishes to travel by Air, we should be grateful if you would endeavour to secure a passage for him some time in April or the beginning of May, by which time sufficient information should have been received to enable a program to be drawn up.
The date of Mr. Binnie's departure would depend upon the time taken to put down the bores, and we would recommend that, if possible, another boring rig should be secured.
