Possibility of grant for benefit of Hong Kong
University has been discussed with Secretary of
Rhodes Trustees, and it appears possible that
although Hong Kong and China would be new
field for Rhodes interests, Trustees might
be prepared to grant for experimental period
of four or five years sum of say £800 per annum
and would carefully consider within approximately
this limit such application as might be
appropriate to Rhodes Trust funds.
In informal discussion at Colonial
Office with Secretary of Rhodes Trustees and
Northcote, following experimental schemes have
been tentatively suggested.
(1) Establishment of say two Rhodes post-
graduate two year studentships to be held at
Oxford for graduate of Hong Kong University.
(2) Endowment in Hong Kong University of Rhodes
Chair of say Colonial history if well-qualified
candidate were available.
(3) Establishment of say two studentships
annually of value of £100 per annum to be held
at Hong Kong University by selected stúdents
from China for four years tenure. These might be
either for graduate or post-graduate course of
study.
of these suggestions Northcote
expresses personal preference for No. (2)
although Trustees might find particular
difficulty
