Many thanks for your confidential

and personal letter regarding Sloss. He is, as you

know, by now in England. I have strongly urged

him to carry on with the Vice-Chancellorship of

the University not only until his contract time

is up, but for the duration of war, if the war

is not over first.

You will have seen, probably,

a copy of the telegram which I sent to Sloss

via

via the Colonial Office, suggesting that he

should make inquiries as to the possibility of

obtaining assistance for the Hong Kong University

from the Colonial Development Advisory Committee

under the new scheme. The Hong Kong University

is the one manifestation of British culture in

this quarter of the globe, and it is to my mind

of the highest importance from the Imperial point

of view that the University should not only

continue but should rise to a considerably higher

grade than it occupies at present.

The universities

which are financed and directed by Americans

flourish throughout China and compare only too

G.E.J. Gent, Esq., 0.B.E., D.S.O.,
