Sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt

of your confidential despatch of the 27th July, 1939, and

note your approval of provision being included in the

1940

-

1941 estimates for two posts of Crown Counsel or

Magistrate in lieu of the two administrative cadets in

training for whom provision would otherwise have been

made.

2.

I will report to you in a separate despatch

regarding the appointment of Mr. H.G.Sheldon, K.C., to one

of the new posts.

3.

Notification No. 378 of 13th May, 1938) the title 'Crown

Counsel' was substituted for that of 'Assistant

Attorney-General'.

In future all barristers in the Hong Kong Service not holding a specific post (such as

Attorney-General, Crown Solicitor, Registrar of the

Supreme Court, etc.,) will be known as 'Crown Counsel' and

all solicitors in a similar position as 'Assistant Crown

Solicitors'. This will involve the deletion of 'Assistant

Attorney-General' from the list of scheduled posts in the
