Allowances, quarters and other circumstances affect- ing the value of the office, including grant of free or assisted passage to the officer and his family on first appointment and on leave.

The duties are identical with those of a Nautical Surveyor appointed by the Board of Trade for the purposes of the Merchant Shipping Acts.

Qualifications are as required by candi- dates for appointment by the Board of Trade as Nautical 3urveyor.

£650 for two years, then £700 x £30 £940 plus a non-pensionable residential allow- ance payable only while in the Colony, at the following rate:

Salary is paid in local currency while the officer is serving in the Colony, at a rate of exchange fixed from time to time by Government. This rate is at present 1/3d- Hong Kong $1.00 so long as the Treasury rate of the dollar, based on the average monthly rate of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corpora- tion, remains at or below that rate.

An abatement of 4% is made from salary under the 'Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Ordinance.

If Government quarters are provided the officer will be charged 12% of his basic salary for unfurnished or 13% for furnished quarters. If no quarters are available and if the officer rents a separate tenement, a rent allowance may be paid in accordance with General Orders.
