I have the honour to refer to my confidential

filling of the vacancy in the post of Deputy Harbour

Master. As stated in my confidential despatch of 20th

May, 1939, I have decided to recommend for this post

a fixed salary of £1200 plus residential allowance of

£70.0.0. on the scale suggested by you. I have

therefore to request that the particulars of office

may be amended accordingly and that the selection of an

officer to fill that vacancy may now proceed.

I take this opportunity of expressing the

hope that it may be possible to make this appointment

at any early date as the Harbour Department is working

under great difficulties as the result of the

simultaneous occurrence of vacancies in the posts of

Deputy Harbour Laster and Assistant Harbour Master.

I have also to refer to the situation which

will arise in the Marine Survey branch of the Harbour

Department if Commander T.C. Stiff is appointed to either

of these vacant posts, as suggested in my confidential (2) despatch of 3rd April, 1939, There will then be a

vacancy for a Ship Surveyor and I have to request that

if Commander Stiff's transfer to an administrative post
