A Resolute Policy.
HERE BRITAIN STANDS.

No one who has read recent declarations of policy by British
statesmen can now be ignorant of the country's determination to
resist the spread of power politics in Europe. Mr. Neville
Chamberlain, the Prime Minister, has repeatedly stated that Great
Britain can no longer tolerate the subjugation of the small nations
of Europe by force, or the threat of force. Lord Halifax, the
Foreign Secretary, has emphasised the seriousness of Britain's intention to make a firm stand against further aggression, and in
a recent speech he gave one of the most comprehensive and con- vincing statements of policy and intention ever uttered by a
Critish statesman.
Speaking at the ammual dinner of the Royal Institute of Inter-
national Affairs in London, Lord Halifax examined the twin
foundations of purpose upon which British policy rests. One is
determination to resist force. The other is a recognition of the
desire of the peoples of the world to get on with the constructive
work of establishing and securing the peace of the world. The
speech was a dignified utterance, worthy of the occasion and of the
nation whose convictions and resolves it so perfectly expressed.
was resolute and free from any shadow of doubt, hesitancy, or
ambiguity of expression. Anyone who now fails to realise that
Britain is in earnest must be either guilty of wilful ignorance, or
wilful misunderstanding.
Lord Halifax referred to the great changes which have taken
place during the past year, changes which have caused Britain to
make agreements for intual defence with Poland and Turkey, to
guarantee to defend Roumania and Greece against aggression, and to
negotiate with: Soviet Russia with a view to an association which
will bring Dritain and Russia to the defence of states in Europe
