Dear Ridgway,
Many thanks for sending me a specimen copy of the
"Weekly London Letter". It is well written, and it seems a great
pity that the venture has lapsed. I agree that something of the
same kind is badly needed, and I have tried to meet this need in
two ways.
As you probably know, the British Council produces a chatty
"London Letter", which they distribute bi-weekly to individuals in
neutral countries. They are, I understand, making efforts to increase
its circulation in the Empire.
The second method took the form of a proposal from myself that a
"Weekly Commentary" might be compiled and sent out to all Information
Officers in the Colonies. Such a commentary could provide background
material for local leaflets, broadcast talks and press articles. My
idea was that this might be done here from the material which comes in
from a variety of sources, but, of course, in the closest
association with the Colonial Office. In fact, it would be prepared
under a sort of joint editorship by a Colonial Office official and
myself, the former referring any point about which he felt doubtful to
higher authority in the Colonial Office.
This suggestion was put up to the Colonial Office some time ago,
but I have not yet heard what view has been taken about it If the
proposal commends itself to you, perhaps you would be good enough to
make enquiries on the subject.
