patriotism that we on that occasion adopted punitive

measures against the traitorous Ching. He must have been

fated to death at our hands, which was why no accidental

loss occurred to us even though we met with two

meddlesome Europeans who wanted to redress (what they

thought to be) a grievance to him but who finally only

asked for suffering and got it. However, Chuk Chung-

leung, No.1 maker of these confessions, dropped an old

black leather shoe which he was wearing on his left foot

and lost his revolver when he and the second European

grappled with each other and rolled down stairs, and that

was all.

On the day (Monday) following that on which we

punished the traitorous Ching, we attended school as

usual. Then we learned from the newspapers that the

traitorous Ching had in fact died on the spot a thing

which we were pleased to hear - and that of the two

meddlesome Europeans the first one, a White Russian, had

been seriously wounded and the second one, a Swiss, had

also died an un-natural death.

One month later the British Municipal

Authorities had four innocent Chinese brethren arrested in

a certain place.

These they alleged were suspects

concerning this case. We could not refrain from being

sympathetic with them in view of the grievous wrong done

to them, for the two of us only were the men who put

Ching to death. After the Ching case had occurred,

although the whole city of Tientsin was thrown into chaos,

we with our minds at ease had been attending school until

the end of June when the school closed for its summer

vacation.

We wanted to join another school; so on July

13th we embarked on the s.s. "Yochow" and proceeded direct

to Hong Kong reaching there on the 24th. We lived in the

house of a relative for about half a month and as we were
