throwing stones.

The troops fixed bayonets and we advanced at the

High Port together with the Police.

The Chinese commenced to retire. About ten Chinese

were in the narrow passage (about 6 wide) between two

barracks.

Stones were still being thrown.

I heard Rifleman Rattan Singh, who was nearest the Chinese in the passage, shout, and saw two Chinese rush at Rattan Singh. One of them got his hand on Rattan

Rattan Singh withdrew his rifle and gave

The crowd retired but continued to throw stones.

I was posted by L/N Narain Singh who explained to me my orders. There is a copy of the orders in the sentry

I can read having passed the 3rd class school.

At a few minutes before 4 o'clock three Chinese

prisoners approached the wire. One of them immediately tried to escape by getting under the wire, about 25X away, the other two threw stones at me. I shouted to them and made signs to them to get back from the wire. They paid no

attention.

The man who was escaping had got under the wire up to the third wire. I fired at him aiming at his thigh. I hit him. He lay there. The two other Chinese pulled him out by the feet. I then sounded the alarm on the whistle. I saw the Chinese crowd throw stones at the troops when they arrived but saw no details.
