There is another sentry on post duty
G
No. 2 post
about 120 yás. from my post. I think he would see what
AND THE AREA
happened. I could see the whole of the men/inside and
outside the wire. The man was attempting to escape.
There were people outside the wire but far away:
There were none near the fence. The nearest people to
the camp were 200 250 yds. from the camp. I did not
see anyone near the fence, Just before the man crawled
through the wire. From 2 p.m. 4 p.m. I did not see
anyone near the fence.
Before going on duty I received certain orders
which I understand thoroughly. I am quite certain that
I saw no Europeans outside that fence.
WRITTEN
There is a copy of the orders in my sentry box v
in Hindustani. When I shouted to the Chinese who was
trying to escape I waved to him with my hand to get back.
My post is about 12 feet in eight and is level with the
outside of the wire. The wash house is 2 /3 yds. from
the inside of the wire. I do not understand Chinese.
I aimed at the man's thigh.
