I have just seen a copy of manifest of Japanese ship which arrived on January 11th. Amongst items thereon were 921 tons of sugar, 84 tons cigarettes, 60 tons of canned and other things such as piece goods, candles, soap, matches, etc. These are not military stores but were consigned to Japanese merchant [grp. undec.] can be purchased freely by Chinese though sale to foreigners is prohibited. They must be paid for in yen which can be obtained at exchange shops and banks at rate of dollars 1,20 cents per yen.
