Divisional Inspector, South.

No.3 Launch.

23rd April, 1939.

Sir,

73

At 09.00 hours on the 23rd April, 1939, No.3 Launch

was steaming down Deep Bay off Black Point, where I sighted three British Naval speed boats passing Deep Bay, who changed

course and proceeded around Tong Ku Island and then in the

direction of Tai 0, No.3 Launch was heading for Tung Chung, when the naval speed boats were off Sam Watt they changed

course again and headed back to Chu Lap Kok where they were met by a fourth speed boat and stopped.

At about 09.45 hours when at a position about 1 mile East of Tong Ku Island, I heard the drone of Aeroplane engines and upon looking up, I and Sgt. Medley saw three single motored monoplanes of high speed passing over No.3 Launch, the monoplanes came from the direction of Castle Peak

then passed over Tong Ku Light and proceeded West of Lin Tin towards a Japanese Man-of-War which was off the Chinese coast about 5 miles South West of Lin Tin Island, the planes then broke formation and circled about for a minute or so over the

Man-of-War, after which they lined up in formation and returned to British Waters where they circled over Sha Chau

Island near No.3 Launch, at a rosition about 1 mile East of

Sha Chau Island, flying at a height of about 15 hundred feet.

These monoplanes were painted silver in colour with

a red tail and a red disc under either wing, no other marks

of identification were visible.

At about 09.55 hours they returned to Chinese Waters towards the Japanese Man-of-War still anchored in same position.

The British speed boats then proceeded from Chu Lap Kok towards Tai 0.

The three monoplanes again returned and circled on
