C. O. REGI

Addressed to the Colonial Office repeated to

the British Ambassador at Shanghai Telegram. No. 79,

Tokyo No. 62 and the Commodore for the Commander-in-Chief.

I hear from reliable source that the Japanese Consul-General here has warned local Portuguese company that their ship Perola will only receive permit to enter Swabue on condition that the cargo is subsequently discharged at Macao she returning to Hong "ong in Ballast. Perola's regular run is between Hong Kong and Swabue bringing e.g. chickens and fresh food hither,

I am inclined to connect this with the closing

of the Pearl River which was declared as from to-day

for a fortnight and with the hints dropped by the Japanese Consul-General at C.nton during his recent visit here that anti-British measures in this part of China might be

instituted. See my third personal note of the 24th July.
