Hong Kong newspapers

have stated that SAGRES was carrying arms. Owners

assure me that the few rifles, revolvers and

ammunition seized by Japanese for which master holds

receipt were those permissible through police

authorities, Hong Kong, in accordance with anti piracy

regulations as is and has been for many years the normal

custom with all British shipping on China coast. The

legitimacy of these arms being on board does not seem to

have been questioned by Japanese authorities.
