EXCITEMENT HIGH DURING RUSH HOUR.

Attempt on ZAU's (SIU) Life on Nanking Road Frustrated.

A heavy investment in a bullet proof limousine of the

latest type returned more than satisfactory dividends yesterday

when it saved the lives of ZAU SHEH-KUNG (SIU SIK KWAN), general

director of the Nippon-sponsored "Consolidated Tax Bureau", TU

HAI-SENG, his young personal assistant, a bodyguard and a

chauffeur.

The attempted assassination, which threw on of Shanghai's

most thickly-congested intersections at the corner of Nanking

and Honan Roads into an uproar at 5.10 p.m. just after office

hours, was the second drastic blow of Shanghai's terrorists in

12 hours. Shortly after 4 a.m. yesterday YU TA-HSIUNG,

counsellor to the puppet government's "Ministry of Industry",

was attacked with hatches and killed in his headquarters at the

New Asia Hotel in one of the most daring acts of the city's

terrorists.

Nor was the evening's attempted assassination on Nanking

Road lacking in daring. The intersection was swarming with

after-office crowds when guns began to bark viciously above the

high pitched shriek of congested traffic.

Two Gunmen Attack.

Two gunmen, standing opposite LAOU KAI FOOK's Silk Store,

Hardoon Building, between the curb and the tram island, were

blazing away at a glistening new Buick limousine as its terror-

stricken inmates attempted to duck.

Crowds scattered in all directions and the two gunmen, who fired a total of approximately 15 shots, calmly walked away.
