The Cables which ascertainl

tables, it clear that officers
serving in different Departments in
Hong Kong have different periods of
probation. It would seem to be a
matter for consideration whether the
period of probation should not be of
uniform duration, as is indeed the
case throughout East Africa (except on
the Kenya and Uganda Railway) and through-
out West Africa and Malaya. There would
be no objection to the adoption of a
general probationary period of either
two or three years.
(d) IV. New scales for other officers
of unified service status.
The scales proposed seem generally
suitable but/Attention is drawn to the
following points of detail:-
(i) Table IIIA on page 26 (Heads
of Smaller Departments and Sub-departments
and Deputies). A fixed salary might be
allotted to the post of Analyst, say
£1,100.
