(See 53939/38).

In our semi-official letter

at 8, and again on page 5 of our despatch

at 12, we stated that there seemed little

point in reducing the Senior Mistresses

from £750 £740. The reason now given

is that it was worked out on the basis of

the arithmetrical proportion to the

corresponding Masters' salary (Senior Master

£1,050).

The relationship between the

Men's and Women's salary existing before 1936 has

been

is now being substantially restored.

As regards the complaint of the

graduate Mistresses that they are under a

disadvantage as compared with the non-graduate

Mistresses in that the latter enter the

Service earlier and therefore have a better

chance of the senior posts, the Governor states

that as this assumption does not accord with

the facts he does not feel able to make any

differentiation between graduates and

non-graduates.

The new salary scale does,

I think, go a long way to meet the legitimate

claims of the women teachers, and if they still

feel grievances I think it is up to them to

{ put them before the Secretary of State before

the normal channel.
