Ping Shan Police Station,

24th September, 1939.

James Shepherd, Police Sergeant A.12, states:-

I am Officer in Charge, of Ping Shan(

) Police

At 12.15 hours on 18th September, 1939, one CHAU NG

Station.

CHAI (

周伍濟

), reported to this Station on behalf of his

father that at about 21.00 hours on 17th September, 1939, while

on board fishing junk No.884 H.C. in Deep Bay off NIM WAN),

a Japanese motor boat came alongside and with gestures ordered all on board to board a sampan, it was noticed that the Japanese poured an oil substance all over the junk then set fire to same.

On receipt of this report I informed Mr. Booker,

Assistant Superintendent of Police (New Territories) who instruct- ed me to send detectives to the scene and to find evidence to

prove the report. I sent Detective Police Constable C.266 WONG

MUK LIN (A) and Detective Police Constable C.531 MOK YIK (莫夹 ) of Castle Peak Station on board No.4 Police

Launch, they returned late in the evening and stated that the wreck had been located at the spot mentioned by CHAU NG CHAI but owing to darkness did not go ashore.

I informed the Assistant Superintendent of Police (New Territories) who instructed me to proceed to the scene accompanied by the owner the following morning. I instructed CHAU NG CHAI to find his father and to meet the Castle Peak Detectives at a place suitable for them and to accompany me on board a Police Launch. At about 08.00 hours next morning (19th September, 1939) the Castle Peak detectives telephoned informing me that these people had failed to put in an appearance also that they had gone to Castle Peak Bay where they were informed that these people had gone to the scene of the wreck by junk.

Together with the Castle Peak detectives I boarded No.11 Police Launch and proceeded to the scene. I found the wreck at
