repatriations, and a slight decrease was recorded for the week

ending August the 5th.

9.

Actually the figures remained below the 10,000 mark

from the middle of May until the middle of August, when

hostilities near the border resulted in a fresh influx of

refugees. Gills Cutting was again opened as a camp on the 18th.

of August.

10.

Throughout the year efforts have continually been

made to repatriate refugees from the camps and every endeavour

has been made to close down cams.

11.

The majority of the repatriations to China coast

ports and Haiphong have been carried out for the Medical

Department of Government by the Tung Wah Committee, who have

arranged the necessary passages and transport from the camps.

12.

Other repatriations have been made direct by the

Medical Department with the assistance of other departments

such as the Police and Railway.

13. Many of those repatriated have been given a small amount of money from Government funds to enable them to reach

their native villages from the port of disembarkation or place

at which the, crossed the frontier.

14.

The work entailed may be gauged to some extent when

it is realised that 842 repatriations had been made through the Tung ah authorities, and 27,062 repatriations by other means

up to 21st September.

15. Recently, the numbers sent away by steamer to coust ports and Haiphong have been affected by the demands for "show money" by the Japanese Military Authorities at Canton and by

the Macao Authorities.
