&

Sir,

RECEIVED

21 DEC1939

C. O. REGY

GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONG KONG.

11th December, 1939.

I have the honour to refer to correspondence

terminating with Sir A. Caldecott's despatch No. 99 of 12th

February, 1936, regarding the Geological Survey of the Colony

undertaken by officers of the University of British Columbia

in accordance with the arrangements reported in Sir R.E.

Stubb's despatch No. 32 of 13th January, 1923, and to inform

you that, after a long delay occasioned by a succession of

misfortunes, the report of the geological survey, with the

exception of the section on the metallic mineral deposits of

the Colony has now been completed and a typescript copy of the

report has been despatched under separate cover for your

information.

2.

Dr. Schofield of the University of British Columbia

informs me that the report is necessarily incomplete because

it is impossible for one geologist to work from the field

notes of another, and because the section on metallic mineral

deposits, of which Dr. Brock was in charge, was left unfinished

at his death, which was reported to you in Sir A. Caldecott's despatch under reference.

3.

It will therefore be necessary for another whole

season to be spent in the field before the omission of this

important section can be rectified and the report completed.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

MALCOLM MACDONALD, M.P.,
