Translator's note.

Throughout the law different

words are used in the Japanese text to distinguish

between a Buddhist sect and a Shinto sect; the regulations of a Buddhist or Shinto sect respectively and those of

a denomination, temple or church; and the believers of

a Buddhist or Shinto sect respectively and those of a

denomination, temple or church. In the translation,

however, for the sake of simplicity, the word "sect" has

in many cases been used to denote either a Buddhist or

Shinto sect; and the words "regulations"

and "believers"

have been used throughout as applying to all the different

bodies provided for by the law.
