Major Hutchinson.

Mr. Gent and I discussed this. We thought

that it would be necessary to telegraph to the

Governor about the salary. The new medical scale

is £700, £700, £760 x £30 - £940/£1,000 x £50 -

£1,150 + residential allowance at rates which are

still under consideration; and it is proposed to

ask the Governor whether he agrees to this scale

for the new Health Officers, with provision for

the grant of initial salary two increments above

the minimum for a candidate with the D. P. H. as

proposed in No. 16 on 20452/10/38 Personnel, i.e.

a candidate with the D.P.H. would be offered the

scale £790, £790, £820 x £30 £940/£1,000 x £50 -

£1,150 + residential allowance.

You will see that on page 1 of the paper

of particulars it is stipulated that the candidates

should possess the D. P. H. or the D. T. M. and H, and

before telegraphing we should like to know

(a)

what are the prospects of securing

candidates with the D.P.H. at the rate

proposed?

(b) What are the prospects of securing

candidates already in possession of the

D. T. M. and H?

If the answers to (a) and (b) are

unfavourable, would it be correct to say that if

candidates ordinarily qualified were selected now

they could not be expected to get the D. T. M. and H.

before March, 1940?
